A lot of Britain's problems come from trying to make the British Constitution function like the US Constitution. Impeachment is an obsolete procedure that is unnecessary when Parliament, unlike Congress, can remove the Prime Minister at any time. thetimes.co.uk/article/rebel-…
To be fair to the "rebels", this is partly a reaction to the presidentialisation of the premiership. The more PMs try to behave like Presidents, claiming authority from outside Parlt & wielding the powers of the executive against it, the more MPs will turn to mechanisms like this
Britain needs to choose between a parliamentary or presidential form of govt. If we want leaders with personal mandates, which they can wield independently of Parlt & even in opposition to it, we shd do it properly, with parties nominating candidates for a presidential election.
If we don't want that, we need to get back to the principles of a parliamentary constitution: with leaders accountable to - and drawing their authority from - MPs. What we mustn't do is to bolt a party presidency onto a parliamentary system. That way - as we've seen - lies chaos.
