I’m finally just getting home from the ballpark and today’s events are finally starting to sink in. It’s hard to fully process a day like today when you’re reporting it as it’s happening.
I want to say that I’m so very glad to have had the privilege...[1/8] #SFGiants
...to know @BruceBochy these past 2 seasons and will forever be grateful for his kindness to me.
One of my favorite Bochy moments was the day I met him.
Entering the world of sports media can be terrifying. I had no experience when I walked...[2/8]
...in the door last season. I got lost more times than I’d like to remember and I was constantly worried about how I would be received as not only a woman but a woman with pink hair, tattoos and metal in my face. But a handful of very kind people made me feel...[3/8]
... immediately welcome and Bochy was among them.
@AmyGGiants was another. On Opening Day 2018 I was standing outside the clubhouse doors trying to gather up the courage to walk in when Amy breezed in. On impulse I turned and introduced myself and told her I was new...[4/8]
... and was very nervous. She grabbed me by the arm and walked me into the clubhouse. “You’ll be fine,” she said. “You’ll do great.”
An hour later in the dugout, after Boch’s pregame press conference, Amy turned to him...[5/8]
...and said, “Bruce, this is Julie. She’s new on the beat.”
We shook hands, and to my surprise, he was friendly and welcoming right away. He didn’t look at me funny, he didn’t even bat an eye at my appearance, and he immediately put me at ease. He smiled and asked...[6/7]
... if he could call me “Pink” and wondered how my singing voice is (it’s dreadful fyi). There wasn’t an ounce of judgement in him and it was such a relief for me.
That interaction, made possible by Amy and Bochy, opened the door....[7/8]
...for me to make introductions with other writers on the beat and helped speed up the process of finding my feet in this new world. For that, I will be forever indebted and grateful to both of them.
Needless to say, the Giants have some very big shoes to fill next year. [8/8]
