1. The "Police Lives Matter" Facebook page accumulated 170K fans

The page purported to be run by U.S. police officers, with cops posting about the "first dayshift of my career with a K9"

It was actually run from Kosovo

2. The page trafficked in misinformation about U.S. cops.

For example, on August 19, 2019, the page claimed that Deputy Farrah Turner had just died from gunshot wounds

Turner actually died 10 months earlier, in October 2018

3. "Police Lives Matter" was part of a network of Facebook pages run from Kosovo that sought to exploit the right-wing backlash against the Black Lives Matter movement w/names like "I Support The Police US not Criminals"

It included pro-Trump memes.

4. The reach of this network was extraordinary. Over the last 30 days, the "Police Lives Matter" page had more reach on Facebook than Vox, Bloomberg, BuzzFeed News, and Quartz COMBINED

5. Hours after I contacted Facebook about the Kosovo network, Facebook took the entire network down, citing unspecified "violations."

6. This is the second major misinformation network on Facebook removed after reporting in popular.info in the last week

I also identified a massive Ukrainian network pushing pro-Trump propaganda.

The two networks used some of the same memes

To bolster the audience of its police pages, the Kosovan network also ran several pages that focused on cute animals, including "Happy Animal Club" and "3-Minute Animal Stories."

(The Ukranian network did the same thing)
