So let's be clear about something: The "only Trump knows how to win" thing is a complete myth, and people who buy into it are setting themselves up for failure with bad assumptions. Republicans won thousands of races 2010-2016 with a variety of different strategies.
Makes no sense to compare 2012 and 2016. Trump barely won against a historically unpopular Dem who ran a terrible campaign and was under FBI investigation. Romney lost to a personally popular incumbent who ran a very strong campaign.
Trump's approach does give him an advantage over Romney in that he has a higher floor of support and negative coverage (which hurt Romney in 2012) doesn't impact him as much. But that same approach also gives him a much lower ceiling than a traditional candidate.
In 2016, that ceiling was sufficient to squeak out a victory, but it's very dependent on his opponent. Trump needs to bring his opponent does to his level to win. In other words, that is not an approach that will lead to success in a lot of races.
