I have been tweeting a bit more recently about Cherokee identity, cultural appropriation, and the politics and ethics of belonging. It seems like a good time to put these in a thread, for those interested.
It started in 2015 with this personal reflection on how to approach the ambiguity of "not knowing" our histories of Indigenous kinship: josephmpierce.com/2015/07/02/in-…
I followed that up in 2017 with an article in Critical Ethnic Studies Journal that discussed the queer narration of adoption stories, return, and also the reception of the "Authentic Indian" piece. Here: pepepierce.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/pierce…
I later collaborated with Adrienne Keene and Rebecca Nagle on the Elizabeth Warren Syllabus, published by Critical Ethnic Studies, here: criticalethnicstudiesjournal.org/blog/2018/12/1…
Over the summer, I published an op-ed in @hyperallergic about the racist use of sacred war bonnets by a group of participants in NYC's pride parade, and the ironic confrontation with the two-spirit contingent that I marched with. hyperallergic.com/509644/there-i…
I had another op-ed come out in @proteanmag about Elizabeth Warren's "apology" at the Native Forum. proteanmag.com/2019/08/21/eli…
I also wrote about the racist @Dior ad featuring Johnny Depp. hyperallergic.com/516186/why-dio…
And I collaborated with Jaskiran Dhillon for an op-ed in @truthout about Kim Teehee, the first delegate that the Cherokee Nation is sending to US Congress. truthout.org/articles/chero…
So, I'm not a stranger to the politics of identity, the ambiguities of Indigenous belonging, or the ways in which Cherokees have been dismissed, erased, or weaponized by white people. I write and educate (I've given numerous interviews to news outlets), and advocate. Thats it.
