What about the thousands of immigrants being robbed of their lives & freedom?

80 years ago today, the US turned away the MS St. Louis, a ship full of German Jews escaping the Nazi regime.

Every person on the ship was sent back. 254 of them were murdered in the Holocaust.
That same year, in 1939, Congress voted down a bill to take in 20,000 Jewish refugee children.

Instead of welcoming refugees seeking asylum, the American government refused to accept them, claiming they would pose a security risk & put American citizens in danger.
The parallels to today are clear & horrifying. The Trump administration’s anti-immigrant, anti-refugee policies — detaining asylum seekers, separating children from families, banning Muslims, dehumanization — come from the same fear & hatred Jews on the St. Louis faced in 1939.

Yesterday, I said that the current Congressional Democratic Leadership is following this “Homeland Security Advisory Council” Report, released April 16th, as an ideological guide for immigration policy. This is a grossly anti-immigrant report!
The HSAC Report routinely blames overcrowding in DHS facilities on “inadequate detention space” and so called loopholes in our legal system. The Report’s proposed “solutions” are to expand DHS’s legal powers and detention capacity.

Democrats should reject this report, instead...

SCOOP: Government inspectors who visited several facilities in the Rio Grande Valley earlier this month found adults and minors with no access to showers, some adults held in standing-room conditions for a week, severe-overcrowding:

The inspectors compiled a draft report, obtained by BuzzFeed News, that described the conditions as dangerous and prolonged. There was little access to hot showers or hot food for families and children in some facilities. Some kids were being held in closed cells.
The draft report was written by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General and addressed to the acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan. It comes after inspectors visited five border facilities and two ports of entry during the week of June 10.
