80 years ago today, the US turned away the MS St. Louis, a ship full of German Jews escaping the Nazi regime.

Every person on the ship was sent back. 254 of them were murdered in the Holocaust.
That same year, in 1939, Congress voted down a bill to take in 20,000 Jewish refugee children.

Instead of welcoming refugees seeking asylum, the American government refused to accept them, claiming they would pose a security risk & put American citizens in danger.
The parallels to today are clear & horrifying. The Trump administration’s anti-immigrant, anti-refugee policies — detaining asylum seekers, separating children from families, banning Muslims, dehumanization — come from the same fear & hatred Jews on the St. Louis faced in 1939.

This is a moment when we are all called — Jews and allies — to gather together in community, to mourn, to share our sadness and our outrage. Tonight at vigils across the country, Jewish communities and allies will light Havdallah candles and mark the end of Shabbat.
This is also a moment when we must call on all Americans of conscience to see with clear eyes that the political violence targeting our communities, driven by antisemitism and racism, has become normalized in our social and political life.

The govt's errors made it impossible for people to know about their immigration hearing dates. Notices were sent:

- to incorrect addresses
- after hearings had already passed
- issued for dates when courts were not in session
- FOR DATES THAT DO NOT EXIST such as Sept. 31
On January 31, 2019 alone, thousands of refugees lined up for hours at courts across the country with paperwork showing that date for their hearings, only to be told there would be no hearings that day. Many of them were ordered deported for failing to appear.

Breaking:
The Trump Administration’s “public charge” rule targeting immigrant families is cruel and harmful to children. Citizen children will lose Medicaid/CHIP coverage as a result of this harsh new rule, reversing the gains we've worked so hard to achieve. 1/
One-fourth of children in this country have at least one immigrant parent, and 90% of those kids were born in the USA. Trump’s “public charge” rule will punish immigrant parents for enrolling their kids in health care. 2/
All children need health coverage so they can grow up to be healthy, successful adults. Families should not be punished for doing what’s right for their kids. #KeepKidsCovered #KeepFamiliesTogether
