It's actually impressive how impervious to news Trump's job approval has been. For virtually his entire presidency, his approval has been between 41-44, and his disapproval between 51-55.
This is not, by the way, normal. Here is Obama's, and Bush's, and Clinton's.
In particular, since February of 2018, literally nothing has budged Trump out of an extremely narrow approval/disapproval window. It's as though, by that time, everyone had already completely made up their minds about Trump and no new information would change it, no matter what
Here is where it meets the road for Democrats: Trump is not measurably more disliked (or less liked) by the country at large than he was when he won the last election. Which means that if Dems think they can run literally anyone against him and win, they are wrong.
The danger they face is that everyone they talk to just hates Trump more and more as time goes by and so they assume the whole country has turned on him, but they fail to realize that all those people hated Trump since day 1 and they weren't enough, and won't be in 2020
Now, there is some evidence that Trump support has eroded substantially in the rust belt states he narrowly carried that led him to win in spite of losing the popular vote by roughly the same margin that John Kerry did. IF true, that might be the end after all.
I mean you can definitely see a scenario in which Trump has the same overall national support but that's as a result of deep red states liking him more and borderline rust belt states turning on him, but I wouldn't bet the farm on that happening, at least not yet, if I were a Dem
