The Nobel Prize in Physics awarded was very well-deserved. However, next time you hear Vera Rubin didn't win for discovering dark matter bc *insert excuse here*, let today show exactly why she didn't win for discovering one of cosmology's most pressing questions: she was a woman.
Today, countless physicists and astronomers chug away at trying to figure out what dark matter is. Myself included. We all owe part of our curiosity and drive to Vera Rubin. Vera Rubin. Remember her: Vera Rubin. Because she's why you do what you do. And she didn't win the Nobel.
And let today show you that "waiting till next year" wasn't even necessary. For the Nobel Prize in Physics could've just as well been awarded to more than one discovery as it was today. But it wasn't because Vera Rubin was. A. Woman. That's it.
Reminder: dark energy, something we understand *far less* than dark matter, has been awarded a Nobel Prize. Dark matter makes up ~25% of the Universe. Vera Rubin discovered it in the 70s and did not receive the Nobel Prize all the years she was alive. Why? Because she's a woman.
So forgive me if I'm not joyful *despite* half the award going to cosmology, and half going to a discovery that ignited curiosity in me as a child, learning exoplanets exist. I would be *very happy* today, but the Nobel in Physics lost meaning to me for all the women they snubbed
And by the way, today's cosmology prize is work done in part due to Vera Rubin's discovery. Suddenly today dark matter, matters. Thanks but we knew it mattered a long time ago. So did the committee. They just wouldn't award Vera Rubin for her work because she was a woman.
This is why in *every talk* you give on dark matter, be sure to include a slide reminding people of Vera Rubin and her work that laid the foundations for much of cosmology today with her discovery of dark matter. Vera Rubin. Remember her.
Finally: I don't want this to be taken as me saying the awardees deserved the Nobel. Jim Peebles has done extremely important work in theoretical cosmology, I don't think we've had Nobels awarded to theory w/o observation. This is huge, particularly for ppl in theory like myself.
His work is paramount for me as a theoretical cosmologist. I am saying, given the committee awarded two very different fields at once, there's no excuse for waiting with Vera Rubin who lived over 40 years after discovering dark matter. One thing that's glaring: she was a woman.
That is all I have to say about this. Remember the women. Remember Vera Rubin. Thank you.
And of course I meant "I don't want to take this as me saying the awardees DIDN'T DESERVE the Nobel", but I'm really good with typos apparently. 🤷‍♀️
