Watergate taught both Republicans and Democrats terrible lessons. It taught Republican presidents extreme caution: they had to avoid the slightest hint of impropriety, because the Democrat/Progmedia Cabal would exploit it ruthlessly to diminish the president’s power.
Democrats learned that, with the assistance of their Progmedia allies, they could drive down a Republican president’s poll numbers so low that his own party would give up on him. They have used this strategy with every GOP president since Nixon and it has worked fairly well.
The problem that Democrats now face is that their Progmedia allies have no credibility, thanks to decades of ever-increasing, relentless partisanship. And Democrats are trying to cover up a political scandal that makes Watergate look like a cookie theft from a school bake sale.
Democrats also face a GOP president who doesn’t ‘know the rules’. GOP president’s are supposed to retreat when attacked and fight, if they fight at all, on the defense. Trump doesn’t care about precedent. He thinks of himself as a mold-breaker, and he is in the fight to win.
