I have the luxury, since I am essentially retired - there exists enough money to get me to consult with you but you'd be wise to spend it some other way - I have the luxury of being idealistic about things.

Of course, I always have been, but now it doesn't affect my income.

But I want to argue here that starting from idealism, and leaning always toward it, is a good way to be. Too many of life's forces push the other way.

As a proponent of change, one often hears "that's all very well and good, but in the real world ..."

My response to that is generally to the effect that we're here to create a better real world, not to accept the one we were handed, but the truth remains that today's reality pushes really hard against change much, maybe most of the time.

I'm old, white, have a reasonable amount of money, and can think of no car I'd rather have, and I've been that way for a long time. So, yes, it's easy for me to say it. It's harder for you, no doubt.

And that's why I'd suggest what I suggest ...

Begin every day from your ideals, whatever your ideals may be. Assess everything in that light and make your moves toward those ideals. At the end of the day, review and renew your focus on your ideals.

Begin and end with your ideals. Yours, not mine. Lean toward them as much as you can. Resist things that push you away, grasp things that push you nearer.

That's today's advice from an old white guy with no right to advise, but plenty of luck and time to do so.
