This is at Prince Edward MTR station, scene of nightly protests against police violence after a horrific police attack on 8/31. Cops are beating on this kid at the entrance ramp of the same station. I was there earlier in the night and there was no reason for police to come out.
It's important to remember that one of the key demands protesters are fighting for is an independent inquiry into police violence. That demand was formulated back in June, and the level of violence against bystanders and demonstrators has gone up astronomically since then.
Much of the police violence now is against residents. These are not black-clad demonstrators but normal people in the neighborhood who come out to remonstrate with police. The cops get angry and go off on people, sometimes using force. At Prince Edward, the cycle repeats nightly
When a cop attacks you like this in the street, what are you supposed to do? The official answer is that you get up, dust yourself off, walk into the police station and file a complaint. You can tell the duty officer that a cop with no visible ID or badge number hit you.
At Prince Edward, it is convenient since the police station is right behind the scenes of police violence. So you don't have to walk too far to file your official complaint–you can just walk into the station those cops ran out of to hurt you. Useful if you were badly injured.
I believe the police are now the leading cause of serious injury in Hong Kong. I would love to see statistics on this if anyone is keeping them.
