Just in: Abubakar Shekau takes on Prof. Zulum, governor of Borno state following the governor's call on the Boko Haram sect members and leaders to turn away from their violent ways, embrace peace and return to normal life. 1/3
Shekau, in a recorded audio in Kanuri and Hausa declined the governor's olive branch. In a calm tone, uncharacteristic of Shekau said the war was just only starting. He vowed that his group was not ready to give up arms, chiding the governor for 'misinterpreting' a verse. 2/3
According to Shekau: His members that want to leave, "know that is about Allah, it is not about any human being." Informed analysts consider the exchange a good sign and have urged the governor not to relent in engaging the insurgents at all necessary levels. 3/3

Zamfara in the last 7 days, like the week before it, reveals how the Military and the armed groups are engaged in a cat and mouse game. Human life remains short and brutish, as about 100 people were abducted and over 30 killed in the past week alone.
The state still suffers at the hands of armed men, including areas that witnessed a lull, following Police & Military deployments. The military is not also smiling with many of the people they were deployed to save. So far they have accused hundreds of complicity in the killings.
On Friday, four people were kidnapped in Jangeme along Gusau Magami road. The following day, three persons were also killed and scores abducted on the road to Sabon Birni from Anka by another band of armed men in #Zamfara.

Zamfara in the last 7 days has not ushered in the desired results following Military deployment. The Military and the bandits, at best, have been playing a cat and mouse game.
At one moment, expectations rise to the impending routing of the bandits in one particular forest and in the next moment the bandits have melted unscathed to other forests.
For instance, we are witnessing an upsurge of banditry and disturbing violence in Safana and Batsari areas in Katsina state. Media and public attention on this front is at zero level, but not any less more troubling than what had been reported in Zamfara.

2009-2019, ten years. That's how long the war in Northeast Nigeria and the Lake Chad region has raged. In that time I have been involved in various capacities on various sides in how this war has evolved. Today my involvement is solely to study it, and aid civilians 1/
In that ten years a lot has changed, a lot has remained the same. My first takeaway is, ISWAP/Boko Haram etc are ONLY as strong as Nigeria allows them to be. Today tje war is at a stalemate, neither side is able to force a victory. Statements of bravado aside 2/
In that ten years insurgent groups have overrun nearly the whole of three states, and have in strength overrun two state capitals (Damaturu and Gombe), and multiple other cities and towns. 3/

Crisis in any nation’s life throws up villains and heroes. The villains cause the crisis, and make villains of leaders who either respond wrongly, or fail completely to respond.
Apart from private houses, a total of 665 municipal buildings comprising ministries, local government secretarial buildings, prisons, police stations and electric offices were also destroyed by the insurgents.
They raided villages and took custody of women and children who they subjected to sexual ordeals of rape & sodomy. They rendered no service for drinking water, health care & food. Theirs was a fatalistic life of mayhem & villainy of the most unimaginable primitive brutality.

The Islamic group was formerly known as Jamā'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihād ( "Group of the People of Sunnah for Preaching and Jihad") .
Mohammed Yusuf founded the sect that became known as Boko Haram in 2002 in Maiduguri, the capital of the north-eastern state of Borno.
He established a religious complex and school that attracted poor Muslim families from across Nigeria and neighbouring countries. The center had the political goal of creating an Islamic state, and became a recruiting ground for jihadis.
