There's been a lot of recent talk about 1970s pregnancy discrimination in light of it costing @ewarren a teaching job. Sadly pregnancy and caregiver discrimination remain widespread. It happened to my sister, @NikkiColumbus. I'd like to share her story. 1/
@ewarren @NikkiColumbus Nikki is in the art world. Over a period of several months in 2017, she was recruited to join MoMA PS1 as associate curator of performance.  2/
@ewarren @NikkiColumbus After @MoMAPS1 made her an offer, she mentioned that she had recently had a baby. They immediately demanded to know why she hadn’t said earlier that she was pregnant. Shortly thereafter, @MoMAPS1 rescinded the job offer.  3/
@ewarren @NikkiColumbus @MoMAPS1 Nikki sued and @MoMAPS1 settled the case, agreeing to pay monetary relief and to distribute newly written or revised workplace policies on employee rights in several key areas regarding pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. 4/

Per this thread the team exiting the case includes a top POLITICAL APPOINTEE, Deputy Assistant Attorney General James Burnham. It's one thing -- terrible and rare! -- for a career lawyer to refuse to participate; it's far worse when even someone on POTUS's team won't play along.
James Burnham was in the White House Counsel’s Office from January 2017 to April 2019. If *he* won’t advance Trump’s new arguments, something is rotten. law.com/nationallawjou…
Why are Burnham and others refusing to contnue on the case? Probably two reasons. First, they're being asked to make wholly implausible arguments. This is extraordinary rare but it's happened before in this administration, in the Obamacare case currently before the Fifth Circuit.

McGahn does NOT have to comply with Trump's instruction. Executive privilege has no force against a former employee who *wants* to testify. 1/
Nor can McGahn reasonably cite attorney-client privilege -- the D.C. Circuit has held that there's no attorney-client privilege between WH counsel and POTUS. 2/
Would McGahn get in trouble with the D.C. Bar? Turns out there's an D.C. Bar ethics opinion (h/t @rroiphe) that says if Congress subpoenas a lawyer's documents and threatens contempt, the lawyer may (but not must) comply. 3/ dcbar.org/bar-resources/…

The topics that distracts us matter little to evil forces. All that matters is that we ARE distracted.

Like a cow chewing our cud, they want us mindlessly processing our feed, without logical thought.

But, we are moving beyond distraction.

How about a #Remain manifesto, agreed & promoted by all major Remain groups? #RemainManifesto

The purpose would be to explain how, if we Remain, we can address Leave's concerns and can commit a future govnt to enact them, to the letter. 1/20
The manifesto could address the main reasons we have been told for the Leave vote.

It could focus purely on the key areas - immigration, sovereignty, EU federal plans, EU wastefulness.
It could detail precise ways in which we can protect ourselves from these concerns. 2/20
hy not compromise by changing Britain as it is today, but not by leaving the EU? And save the cost & risk of Brexit.

But I think we should only address the areas directly detailed as being the reasons for the Leave vote. Not what we suspect may be underlying. 3/20

I recently talked with graduate students in a seminar on #teaching practices in #HigherEducation about how to design and teach a course when you are not an expert on all of the content--which is really what most teaching is. Here are the main takeaways for those interested. 1/
In my experience, there are four main mistakes that novices often make when designing and teaching a course for the first time.

First, they approach the task by venturing off on their own into the wilderness of literature on all of the topics they don't know well. 2/
In other words, they prepare for course design as if it is a qualifying exam, attempting to become experts on all of the topics that the course will/should/must cover. 3/

Being the financial capital through which the majority of € is traded while still keeping the £.

The UK has taken the lead in efforts for EU enlargement. It pushed for the inclusion of Eastern European states. It pushed for Turkey to get its shit together so that it could join (which it made very slow progress with, and has largely been undone by Erdogan)
After #Brexit, the UK will have no influence on EU enlargement. In fact, as setting the EU as a rival, every country that joins the EU will a) strengthen the EU, and b) unravels any trade deals that the UK will have made with that country, isolating it further.
