in preparation for the 'how to finance Green New Deal' panel tomorrow - at 1.30, in I2-220 #WBGMeetings I am taking the @WorldBank course on Maximising Finance for Development
I call the turn to private finance in international development #WallStreetConsensus - and it's increasingly framed through Green New Deal discourses .
the course has nearly 20.000 people registered, and it's an amazing window into the benign, depoliticised view of leveraging private finance into #SDG assets
it says nothing about: PPPs, fiscal resources into derisking assets so these become 'investible', the commodification of public services involved (Ecuador protests a warning), or the financial stability aspects of re-wiring your financial system around capital markets.
the problems of access to basic services are framed as problems of state intervention into what should be private terrain
my favourite, the practice quiz, tells you something about the scale of structural transformation envisaged by the #WallStreetConsensus
oh no, WB experts still havent caught up with endogenous money/banks create money view of how the world of finance actually works
I am rocking this quiz! 'over-regulation is wrong'
finally, course says something about the intellectual poverty of private education models that WB is pushing onto poor countries: no critical engagement with issues, no discussion of downsides, wrong answers, leading questions.
Should be fun tomorrow.
