Good evening #cdnpoli! We're minutes away from results from Newfoundland and Labrador. Buckle up, friends!
I'm keeping an eye on @CPC_HQ results in particular tonight - Newfoundland could be telling. They might not pick up a seat here but if we see a significant bump in Tory vote share it could bode well for the party nationwide.
I was with Scheer for his one and only stop in the province this campaign. He had an event in St. John's East - it was a tepid turnout - but that riding could be one to watch given the traditional strength of @JackHarrisNDP
I love that we're at that point in the night when we're hanging on tens of votes from a single poll!
Polls have just closed in the Maritimes. It's here where we could see some early Tory strength tonight.
First take: The Conservatives are doing much better in Atlantic Canada than they did in 2015. Forget about seat count - the vote share is up quite a bit in all the ridings compared to what Harper put up last time.
Another takeaway: the NDP and the Greens have not benefited from the Liberal slip. Those numbers are going en masse to the Tories in Atlantic Canada.
At this early stage in the count - the Liberals are down 14 points in Atlantic Canada. The Tories are up 12. The NDP and the Green are seeing a marginal bump.
Despite the Tory bump in vote share - if this seat split holds (Liberals at 24, the Tories at 6 and the NDP at 1), then the Liberals are quite happy heading in to Central Canada.
The path to a majority Conservative majority government included (in part) picking up at least 10 seats in Atlantic Canada. #cdnpoli
We're seeing the first instance of a progressive vote split that could benefit the Conservatives. The Fredericton riding is a real three-way split between CPC/Greens/Liberals - and it's help Conservative Andrea Johnson right now.
A substantial result to report - CBC News has declared Liberal MP @SeanFraserMP has won in Central Nova. For many years this was solid (solid!) Tory country, Peter MacKay country. Fraser's constituency work has paid off as he's won the riding handily. #cdnpoli
So, parachuting in a country music star to run for the Conservatives might not have been the best idea - in hindsight!
Another important Liberal victory - cabinet minister @BernJordanMP has held on to her South Shore-St. Margaret's seat. This was, for many years, also solid Tory country. Jordan has proven decisively that she wasn't a one-hit wonder.
Cape Breton is very close at this stage. I expected this despite the huge Liberal margins in 2015. The Tories are running two popular and well-known former provincial PC MLAs on the island - and the Liberal candidate in Sydney-Victoria, Jaime Battiste, has had *ahem* some trouble
In Nova Scotia, the Liberal brand is proving resilient. There was some doubt as to whether Kings-Hants was a Liberal seat or a "Scott Brison" seat. Well, Liberal Kody Blois has won by a sizeable margin.
In New Brunswick, unlike in NS, the traditional Tory seats have reverted to form. The Conservatives have won easily in New Brunswick Southwest, Tobique-Mactaquac and Fundy Royal.
With a few seats outstanding in Atlantic Canada - I'm looking at you Sydney-Victoria and Saint John - we're about to get flooded with results from Central Canada. Stand by.
With just five polls reporting, Conservative Party candidate Richard Lehoux has a marginal lead over People's Party Leader Maxime Bernier.
Just a tip about some of the early results - the first that are reported are so-called "mobile polls" which, in most cases, are polls that are set up inside seniors homes/retirement residences.
So, those mobile polls might skew some of the initial results based on what we know about the voting patterns of that demographic.
At this point, things are looking good for the Liberals. The so-called NDP surge has not yet materialized in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.
BREAKING | CBC News projects a Liberal government #cdnpoli
We don't yet know if it will be a minority or majority government. There are still results in 70 seats to come.
BREAKING | CBC News is now projecting a Liberal *minority* government.
Pure speculation on my part: Goodale could be appointed to #SenCA - sit as a member of the government caucus alongside the likes of @SenHarder - and represent the West in cabinet as a senator.
I'm very sorry to see @lraitt go down to defeat tonight - a true class act and an exemplary parliamentarian.
If the current seat count holds, this Liberal minority government is stronger than what Harper achieved in 2006. 156/338 seats for Trudeau = 46% of the seats. 124/308 for Harper = 40% of the seats.
New from me at this hour — Andrew Scheer falls short - and faces cloudy future as Conservative leader. CBC.ca/1.5329809 #cdnpoli @CPC_HQ
The vote total numbers are in flux but, at this point, the Conservatives are at 4.98 million votes (34.4 per cent) compared to 4.77 million (33 per cent) for the Liberals. Lopsided Conservative victories in Alberta and Saskatchewan are partly to blame, I suspect.
Another story line of the night, Green disappointment. While the Greens started the election with double-digit support in most polls, they have sunk to just 6.3 per cent in national support. They've won just one more seat than they had when Parliament dissolved.
If that 6.3 per cent number holds - it's actually a worse result than what Elizabeth May posted in the 2008 federal election. The Greens got 6.8 per cent in that election.
Remember all that talk about how approving the Trans Mountain pipeline would kill Liberals in B.C.? The Liberal MP at the base of the expanded TMX marine terminal, @terrybeech, beat NDP stalwart Svend Robinson tonight in Burnaby North-Seymour. #cdnpoli
The NDP result is disappointing, by most measures. Their vote share dropped 4% compared to 2015. They lost 19 seats including in Quebec and the party's birthplace, Saskatchewan. They failed to pickup any seats in urban Toronto. B.C. the only place of relative strength
Scheer is up now.
And so is Trudeau! The two campaigns didn't plan this well!
Both leaders taking the stage at the same time ... doesn't bode well for this minority Parliament.
This is a mess.
"You did it my friends, congratulations," Trudeau says to his supporters.
"We will govern for everyone, regardless of how you cast your ballot ours is a team that will fight for all Canadians," Trudeau says.
"Coming close ... let's use it as fuel to redouble our efforts. Because our work is not over, Canadians are counting on us," Scheer says. "Canadians will need us to replace the Trudeau Liberals."
"Tonight, Conservatives have put Justin Trudeau on notice and, Mr. Trudeau, when your government falls Conservatives will be ready and we will win," Scheer says.
"We've also made some history of our own tonight. Tonight, we've accomplished what only two parties have ever done before by holding a first-term majority government to a minority. We have picked up seats and support in almost every region of the country," Scheer says.
"Remember 2004 - Harper's first election - he erased Paul Martin's majority and then went on to lead a Conservative government that lasted nearly 10 years. This is how it starts, this is the first step and now we're heading back to Ottawa with a much bigger team," Scheer says
"With more support from coast-to-coast and with an endorsement from the Canadian people that we are the government in waiting," Scheer says.
