It really distresses me when well-meaning people refuse to have their children vaccinated. Vaccination works not only individually, but socially, creating #HerdImmunity. Refusing vaccination might feel right-on, but in reality it's antisocial: theguardian.com/society/2019/o…
Wildly irresponsible journalism costs lives.
I wonder how many people this column killed.
I'm glad the Daily Mail has now changed its tune on vaccination.
But we shouldn't quickly forget its culpability on this issue.

Actually, large numbers of humans did not survive. They died of infectious diseases. If unvaccinated people escape these plagues today, it is because other people have been vaccinated. Those who refuse to have their kids vaccinated are free riders.

We won! The Section 14 Order imposed by the Met Police, banning all XR public assemblies in London, has been declared UNLAWFUL by the High Court.
This is a crucial judgement. It protects everyone's democratic rights to protest against a draconian attempt to shut them down
Hundreds of us were arrested under Section 14, and many more were doubtless deterred from joining XR's protests. The Metropolitan Police attacked a fundamental human right - the right to dissent. And in doing so they behaved unlawfully.
I was one of the claimants in the judicial review against the police. But the work was done by the brilliant @Jules_Carey, @judebunting, Phillippa Kaufman QC, @BindmansLLP, Tobias Garnett, @XRlawyers and other smart and determined people. Thank you.

A beautiful little stream flowing through a South Devon wood. The perfect place to ... dump your old tractor tyres, fencing and radiators.
And your concrete tank, plastic pipes and old motorbike.
As far as I can tell, the only access points to the field from which these things appear to have been dumped are through the farm buildings at one end, or via a padlocked gate at the other.

I keep banging on about this, because it strikes me as amazing that while we are rightly concerned about climate breakdown and habitat destruction, hardly anyone seems angry about the global circulation of plant diseases, through the unnecessary live plant trade.
This spreading of plant diseases could wipe out forests everywhere, as every tree eventually meets its deadly pathogen. The benefits of the live plant trade are tiny by comparison to its costs. It's time we raised our voices to bring it to an end. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

2/23 Abuse is an invisible dynamic with a range of visible behaviors. The focus on visible behaviors only, allows abusers to take advantage of good well-meaning people and continue to abuse with the support of these “well-meaning” people.
3/23 Abuse is always a bait and switch dynamic. Words and actual actions are incongruent, but the goal is that, on the average, people will respond to the words only and will not notice the underlying dynamic
This allows abuse to continue and be supported by well-meaning people

There is a fatal flaw we moral, reasoning, social animals are prone to because our social needs tend to dominate everything else.

That is, although, for most of us, our moral intuitions themselves are strong & relatively consistent, we are prone to shifting our stances on various things relative to the moral norms of our social group & then using our reason to make this fit our ethical framework.
This is often not even consciously recognised. The whole 'virtue signalling' thing is real & seldom cynical or deliberate. Our need to be in good standing with our group is very strong not only for support but for our own sense of being a good person. We need validation
