Here’s an idea: when he says insane/racist things, go ahead and cover it, but add his immediate (enormous) problems as the underlying context. The two aren’t disconnected.
It's just like parenting a small child. 1. Kid does something they're not supposed to 2. kid has consequences 3. kid dislikes consequences then has tantrum and/or acts out. Do you then say to yourself, "wow, that tantrum came out of nowehere!"? Of course not.
You inform kid they can be as mad as they want, but that this additional bad behavior will have additional consequences they'll dislike AND it doesn't change the fact that they did something they shouldn't have.
