Scanning through some old reading it becomes apparent that many Brexit supporters still don't understand what it will mean to be outside the EU / single market - they're so accustomed to frictionless trade that they refuse to believe an FTA will not maintain this
Problem will be that Brexit supporters / government will blame the EU when they refuse to recreate the single market for the UK in an FTA. The difference between the UK and other EU satellites like Norway and Switzerland is that they admit the power imbalance
Equally for global Free Trade Agreements Brexiteers equate them with the freedom to trade in the EU but these are actually far more limited, eliminating some trade barriers but retaining many more. Again storing up disappointment, but it can be blamed on others.
You can hope logic will enter the UK's international trade discussion, but frankly blaming others for failing to deliver what was never likely is more in keeping with Brexit debate so far. Many Brexiteers are already blaming remainers for Johnson reneging on N Ireland promises
I'm expecting a General Election competition between Johnson trumpeting the huge potential gains of a US FTA (untrue) and Corbyn arguing Johnson will sell the NHS to Trump in an FTA (also untrue). As well as a competition of unrealistic visions for the future EU relationship.
All of which is to say I'm not feeling terribly optimistic about reality entering the UK public debate on trade and international relations any time soon. Sorry for the Autumn gloom. I blame the weather /end
