There’s been a decades long steady diet of disinformation about Equalization emanating from RW media (and in AB, it’s almost all RW media), oil lobbyists, talk radio and politicians.
There’s a revolving door between the legislature and the oil industry and financial benefits continue to flow to politicians from the industry in various ways. Politicians from the industry continue their interests in the oil company they’re from. Media NEVER investigated this.
RW strategy in AB is to destabilize the political and economic landscape and sow deep divisions and run intense smear campaigns against any political diversity.
It’s STRATEGY in AB to do this. They have no intention to work with other parties. This was crystal clear in speeches from Scheer, Kenney and Moe yet the media does not question this but instead calls on Trudeau (who did talk about serving all Cdns) to fix this.
The funders of these RW campaigns and the non-stop political messaging are primarily the oil industry, but also the large property developers. They fund ‘Think Tanks’ in their interest and media, like lap dogs, report the ‘findings’ as ‘news’ & without challenge.
When the economy is good and improving in AB or Canada under an NDP or Liberal government, the constant messaging is to convince ABs and Cdns that it’s ‘disastrous’.
Unemployed Albertans begin to associate their economic suffering with Libs, NDP. THIS IS BY DESIGN. So when the industry busts, ABs blame Libs, NDP and not the inaction of Cons, not the oil industry who’re mostly directly responsible.
Then ABs elect Cons repeatedly, further insulating Cons from any kind of scrutiny or accountability and rendering ABs unable to shine daylight on corruption and criminality.
When Trudeau gave $700M to EI for Albertans extending benefits back to when Harper was in power (he didn’t have to do that) because Harper refused to help them, Albertans ignored it or treated it with suspicion and decided it was bad. Took the money, tho’.
When Trudeau bought a pipeline, investing $4.5B in AB’s interest to ensure TMX doesn’t die, ABs hate him for it because all media, politicians, some O&G employers and pundits flooded the airwaves to make sure ABs concluded he bought it to close it down. It’s loony-town here.
Enter the carbon tax. This was a boon for the RW as they stacked this on top of their stoked ‘western alienation’ sentiment built by decades of RW bunker strategy - a strategy to blame others for busts and Con fiscal incompetence & Ottawa as being ‘out of touch’.
In AB, any environmental challenges to the carbon-intensive oil sands is to be put down, dismissed and the critics of the industry to be derided and treated with extreme hostility and threats to their person, families and jobs. This is not normal, or accountable & not freedom.
The constant disinformation and anger and unmitigated boom/bust cycle and alienation is the intentional result of RW strategy over decades. It’s a strategy that has kept them in power and made some politicians very rich far beyond their public salaries. Media does care.
Sure, it’s on this minority gov and Trudeau in particular to find a way to work with AB & SK but this cannot be a one way street. The decades long failures, mismanagement and collusion in AB RW politics MUST be addressed.
It is unacceptable that our media gives AB UCP a pass and treats them with sympathy and deference. The media MUST also put pressure on Kenney and not treat his grievances as Albertans’ grievances. They are not valid without scrutiny.
Media does NOT care.
