koleszar suggests in light of the cale elementary school renaming maybe they should adopt a policy not to have any schools named after people. “i don’t think we as a school board should be in the business of evaluating the worthiness of historical figures”
(cale elementary is being renamed after a through committee evaluation of paul cale’s legacy. the school board voted to go with the committee’s opinion that the school should be renamed)
dr hairston is presenting the update on the antiracism policy (the board still hasn’t passed an official policy on banning hate symbols in schools - seems like a good time to revisit that!)
the district is working toward developing antiracist curriculum & evaluating current curriculum

hopefully the effort to reframe the narrative in US history curriculum will result in students getting a more accurate picture of our state’s history than i got as a kid. i remember learning that enslaved people liked slavery because their masters took such good care of them 😒
on to the district’s legislative priorities. some things albemarle county schools plans to ask the legislature: to remove the funding cap for student support services like counseling & other mental health services and allow the district to ban guns from school board meetings.
they also plan to ask the general assembly to raise the solar power purchase agreement caps (from 50 to 500 megawatts). the district is already approaching the legal limit and would be able to realize long term savings if they could use more solar power.
the school board will vote on the legislative priorities at a meeting next month and will meet with legislators in december. koleszar says in the future, those meetings should happen BEFORE the election, to apply more pressure on those politicians.
