Discussions on the freeway rages on. Yesterday I had two opportunities to discuss the expressway. First with researchers at Kenyatta University, then with the PS Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport, Housing and Urban Development, Charles Hinga.@KenyattaUni #KUBRIC
I told them that the freeway discussion goes beyond Uhuru Park to the nature and future of cities. Freeways have no space in the future city; the future city is for people, walking, cycling, using public transport with low carbon foot print. The future city is not about cars.
The future city must be sustainable from environmental perspective; must protect people's cultures and ways of life; must provide economic opportunities for all; and must be democratic and just!
The expressway will be like putting up an 18 km long building, with a span of 23 metres. Should it succeed, you can imagine it as an 18km long open market; an 18 km long shelter for homeless people all the way from the airport to Westlands...
as an 18 km den for thugs that will be impossible to cross at certain times of the day; as 18 km hard surface collecting water that will overwhelm our non existent storm water drainage system...
an 18 km concrete structure picking up heat during the day and radiating the same at night creating an urban heat island; under it will be an 18 km long interruption of the local micro-climate and ecosystem; I can go on and on...This is urban dystopia!
