Grenfell Tower Inquiry has the classic hallmarks of elite impunity. The first part of the report which focus on the fire brigade will be what's remembered. It focuses on things like the "stay put" policy, which rested on the understandable assumption

that such buildings met a specific level of fireproofing. It is no doubt true they could have done things differently but how much was also due to systemic cuts in the budget that had a deleterious impact on training, manpower and incident response. The normative assumption
in all this ridiculous performance by many undertakening the report is that somehow effective institutions can be maintained when their budgets are eviscerated. Following 9/11 security services were lionized, in the UK they are the easy target #GrenfellReport

[Thread] 1/ This thread is on a bizarre hashtag in Kuwait. Thanks for the help of @ALYOUSEF94 and @courtneyfreer for highlighting some unusual trends and steering me on certain aspects of Kuwaiti politics. I analysed the hashtag #السكران_يدعو_السكارى_للاراده , which translates as
'the drunk calls the drunks to will/freedom square'. The 'drunk' is a reference to former Kuwait Saleh al Mulla ( @SalehAlmulla ) and 'drunks' presumably to those who support him. Thus one can reasonably assume that those behind the hashtag either 1) don't like al Mulla
@SalehAlmulla 3/ 2) don't want protests 3) both. Possibly candidates for one, according to @courtneyfreer could be the Ikhwan or pro-gov Shia Islamists, or presumably, the government themselves. Anyway, I won't get bogged down in who is behind it. Onto the data...

[Thread] 1/ Have an update on this thread. I managed to download around 1,700 comments of the total 17,000 or so that people posted on this 'suspicious' FB post by Boris Johnson. I say 'suspicious' because people noted how many identical comments there were saying things
2/ like 'brilliant boris', 'excellent boris' and 'supporting boris'. Myke above noted that it appeared to begin with people posting Brilliant Boris, and then this changed to 'Support Boris 100%'. I grouped the comments by keywords. 39% of the comments contained the word 'support'
3/ or 'supporting'. 20% contained the word 'brilliant', while 10% contained the term "100%" (as in "supporting Boris 100%). Funnily enough, 9% included the term 'bot', as people are clearly viewing this activity with suspicion. 6% also contain 'WTO'. I then arranged the groups of

2013 - Boris Johnson overrules the ruling body of the London Fire Brigade and uses legal action to inflict £29m in cuts. Closing 10 fire stations, cutting firefighters by 552, losing 14 fire engines and cutting minimum staffing levels from 5 to 4.
By the time he steps down as Mayor of London he inflicts a further £100m in cuts to £130m total and the loss of 7000 firefighters. Fire prevention measures carried out by the service drop by over 25%.
When challenged by a committee on fire safety on how cutting the fire service would not increase deaths, Boris replies "get stuffed".

New: we have obtained letters which show PM's chief of staff @GavinBarwell did not act on multiple warnings on fire safety and building regulations in the lead up to #Grenfell - the last letter arriving just 26 days before the fire

I have cancelled my subscription to @LRB due to incredibly poor judgement in publishing Andrew O'Hagan's lengthy article on #GrenfellTowerFire, and then allowing him space the following week to attack bereaved community member using pseudo-objective word games #Justice4Grenfell
In his reply to the person's complaint that material was used without permission and her words were twisted, O'Hagan reveals new personal details about her and Grenfell survivors.
Throughout the article, he sets up Grenfell activists, local groups and residents' associations to look stupid/demanding, using words which undermine their work before and after fire: "barrage of complaints" "they pursued it obsessively" "dozens of other things they didn't like"

I'm back at the Grenfell Tower Inquiry today, and will be posting updates throughout the day. We're starting with the opening statement from Mr Kebede, in whose flat the fire started.
Rajiv Menon, representing him, attacks Andrew O'Hagan's LRB piece: "[Mr Kebede] did not pack a suitcase and leave with it after raising the alarm, a nasty lie that was first reported in the days after the fire and sadly continues to be peddled nearly a year later."
Menon: "Can I please use this opportunity to ask everyone - but in particular the press - to leave Mr Kebede alone? He is a good man, he did nothing wrong. On the contrary, he did the right thing from start to finish. Now he wants privacy for himself and his family."
