1/ Another 73 killed in a train accident that should have been avoided if there were proper protocols and procedures.

The broader issue is the appointment of utterly incompetent people in extremely important positions.

2/ For low-income countries like Pakistan, development is a serious challenge. Things are bad for a reason, and for the country to progress, systems have to be built, teams have to be set up, innovative solutions need to be crafted etc.
3/ All of this requires very capable people at the top, with a track record of building stuff. These individuals then need to be given discretion to do what is needed.

Until then, we have what we have.

1/ A thread on political meddling and economic growth.

Suppose there is a powerful group (PG), or a foreign country, that is trying to impose and maintain control over the political affairs of a country.
2/ Ideally PG would like to enter into a long-term agreement with a political party along the lines: "we'll support you to stay in power, if you do xyz for us".

But the problem is commitment. Once in power, the political party may do whatever it likes.
3/ Hence the need for keeping them on a "leash", which PG does by also supporting the opposing party just enough to keep the probability of a party staying in power always 50/50.

But 50/50 strategic rule also maximizes uncertainty.

What keeps poor countries poor? This picture always reminds me of one important reason: "Resource misallocation".

Here's the story.

Eager to help his young country, Dr. Abdus Salam, the future Nobelist, returned to Pakistan in 1951 as a 25 years old star of the Physics world.
He wanted to build a world-class Physics department at the university he joined.

But guess what job he was handed by the head of the university? ... A soccer coach!

Here he is sitting with the soccer players (and feeling out of place).
Disappointed and unappreciated, Abdus Salam went back to UK. There, at only 30, he was offered a chair and asked to head the center for theoretical Physics at Imperial College.

1/ What's the relationship between markets and morality?

I'd define markets as incentives, e.g. you need to pay someone to make them work for you, or you need to pay someone to build something for you.

In a way, morality starts where markets end.
2/ If Adam is getting paid to teach a child, Adam's act of teaching is not necessarily moral - he is being rewarded by the market for his deed.

But if Adam teaches a child for no compensation or recognition, but only to help the child, then the act may be called "moral".
3/ A healthy society needs both markets and morality. Markets to put bread on the table, and morality to create love and trust between peoples.

For example, see Ernst Fehr's terrific work who shows how incentives can "crowd out" pro-social behavior.

People born in the late 1990's missed the worst part of Nigeria.

Until Buhari came back in 2015.

See, anyone extolling poverty must be studiously avoided.

Ask those that were teenagers or adults during the wasted decades of the 80's and 90's.
I hope people know that there was a time that Nigerians could NOT afford Kerosine for cooking or it simply was not available.

People resorted to cooking with sawdust.

Yes, sawdust.

It was deployed in something Nigerians called "Abacha stove"
There was a time bread, milk and sugar (basic stuff, so called Essential Commodities) were scarce and people queued to buy limited amounts.

Rice was a treat.

Red eyed poverty...

People need to stop making it seem like complaining about your job as a programmer makes you a terrible person. Shaming someone for wanting to control when other people can demand their time--a perfectly natural worker's right--is wrong.
I've worked in tons of fields, even in the Army as a grunt soldier, and programming is the only job where totally incompetent people who can't do the job could walk in and demand my total attention without any scheduling or permission. Even Army officers were more respectful.
Even factory workers have specific break times. Very few artists even work in teams. Writers work almost entirely alone. Journalists have long stretches of uninterrupted time to work solo on articles. Soldiers are told what to do then left to do it.

But nobody takes those guys seriously.
Great researcher @TheLastRefuge2 makes a convincing case leakers are being caught by being fed canary traps.
