White supremacists gathered around civil rights martyr Emmett Till's memorial today with a Mississippi Flag & a League of the South flag to film a racist propaganda video. The Emmett Till Interpretive Center's security cams at the now-bulletproof monument caught them. 1/
Shortly after, members of the white supremacist org disperse & scurry to their cars after apparently setting off a security alarm at the newly-replaced Emmett Till memorial, now bulletproof, after being shot up repeatedly. (Warning: loud video). Story + more footage coming. 2/

I'd also just like to put a fine point on the fact that the League of the South is a neo-Confederate group that seeks to "finish" the work of Southern secession, but chooses to use what is a predominantly white flag as its symbol. Oddly appropriate. #TheseColorsRun

"Where are all the white people over the last 50 years that have been murdered, assaulted, & raped by blacks going to be memorialized like this? We are the League of the South."

What's so insidious about standing in front of Emmett Till's memorial asking where the monuments are to white people raped by black men:

Emmett Till was murdered after a white woman falsely claimed the boy, 14, WHISTLED at her.

1000s were lynched bc or false rape claims.
In other instances, black boys and men have spent decades in prison after being falsely imprisoned for rape.

Like the Central Park Five, whom Donald Trump called for be executed and who he still claims are guilty despite the real rapist's confession.
The League of the South is based in Killen, Ala.

Says something that these guys use our state flag as a symbol of their hate, when most aren't even from here.

And before you trash Mississippians: Rememebr we are the blackest state in the US, nearly 40%.
This should say **100s, not thousands.

Mississippi will have an election under a Jim Crow-era electoral college-style law requiring the victor to not only win the popular vote, but a majority of House districts.

Some say Democrats will now need to win 55% of the vote to win the Nov. 5 election. #MSelex 1/

Racist speech has evolved since overt language is no longer socially acceptable. Racist speech has become more covert. Racists have learned Code language (dog whistles) that slows them to say racist things but claim plausible deniability. Amazing how many Christians do this.
They won’t say the n-word. But they will speak of black people in other ways that demonstrate their believe their are inferior. The problem is; folks not trained in racialized speech won’t catch on to the nature of said speech. Those well read in racial history see thru this tho.
What you end up w/ is folks who will defend racist white peers at all cost (cuz worst thing a white person can be called is racist) despite fact that the white person has said clearly racist things. In their minds, it’s fine to call black people racist; just never white people.

There weren't a lot of them, but for the record, yes, there *were* Jewish segregationists and white supremacists in the civil rights era.

Hunter Gray, a Civil Rights leader in JXN, MS, in the early 1960s, died earlier this week. He is most famously known for taking part in the 1963 Woolworth sit-in in JXN, which yielded this iconic photo. Gray is sitting at the counter, on the left. #Mississippi #NonViolence
In 2015 Gray wrote an account of the day for the @guardian: "That’s me in the picture. . . . They cut my face with sharp brass knuckles; someone cut the back of my head with the jagged edge of a broken sugar container. There was a good deal of blood." theguardian.com/artanddesign/2…
The picture of course went instantly everywhere. “Friends across the country called to say they had seen it, and we got letters from people all over the world.”

The image’s ongoing value, said Gray, was in reinforcing the idea that “change comes” from “grass roots people.”

Today is the 6th Friday of the #GreatReturnMarch. Last Friday there was a more organized attempt to reach the #GazaFence & Israeli army promised to respond harsher. Israel also declared human rights laws do not apply to the protesters. 48 killed & ~7,000 wounded so far in Gaza
