This is a hobby-horse of mine and so I will continue to bang this drum even though others have done the same: the past does not matter for an FTA. The future does. It is not about being aligned, it is about committing, legally, to being aligned in the future (thread).
The EU is asking for level-playing field commitments and the political declaration is making clear that the less trade barriers you want, the more LPF you need. To some extent this Is reminiscent of something the EU Committee of the House of Lords said a long time ago
And we absolutely need to improve debate about this. Because I have heard repeatedly “of course we’ll stay close”, but always in the abstract, non-specific. An FTA will require specificity. We’ll have high standards? How do we show. We’ll stay aligned? Where precisely.

@Channel4News First of all: what is unlikely (and does not keep me up at night) is for the “privatisation of the NHS” to appear in any FTA. The UK would never agree to it and I do not see the US asking for it. But that doesn’t mean that there is nothing to worry about.
@Channel4News A frequently voiced US concern is that drug prices in the US are higher than elsewhere - particularly than in countries where medical services are public. The US argument is this: our patients finance innovation. You free-ride.

The government‘s reaction to the Channel 4 story. There is a problem here:
- if it’s not on the table: why are government officials discussing it repeatedly with US representatives of big pharma?
What is the remedy? (Short thread)
1) Transparency. The government needs to approach FTAs openly and transparently. Consult with stakeholders. Consult with Parliament. Publish negotiation goals and red lines.
2) Consistency: if you repeatedly discuss a topic with your opposing side and do not block discussion, your raise reasonable expectations with the opposing side. These might be difficult to contain.

Parliament has been prorogued, the benches are empty, and Boris Johnson finally has a chance to rule without scrutiny from MPs. The perfect time for a thread about constitutional crisis.
The term is everywhere these days - Reuters have even done a helpful guide reaching back to Magna Carta. For once I think the circumstances probably justify the hyperbole. What’s the problem and how did we get here? uk.reuters.com/article/uk-bri…
The political problem is Brexit. The constitutional problem is the relationship between the executive, legislature & public. (Which is why last night's Commons debate was so fractious.) There’s an internal and external dimension to this — let’s start with the internal.

Losing Single Market access DOES NOT mean we stop trading.
The Single Market is the system of shared EU regulations and the automatic acceptance of products from other EU countries when there's no common EU rule. It avoids having to comply with 28 sets of rules, lowering costs.
