The government‘s reaction to the Channel 4 story. There is a problem here:
- if it’s not on the table: why are government officials discussing it repeatedly with US representatives of big pharma?
What is the remedy? (Short thread)
1) Transparency. The government needs to approach FTAs openly and transparently. Consult with stakeholders. Consult with Parliament. Publish negotiation goals and red lines.
2) Consistency: if you repeatedly discuss a topic with your opposing side and do not block discussion, your raise reasonable expectations with the opposing side. These might be difficult to contain.
3) Meetings with pharma might make sense for other reasons. So to avoid rumours: be transparent. Publish that they were meetings. Publish what they were about.
4) I can go farther: the government has to decide what’s good for the country and make difficult trade-offs. But if you do it in secret and don’t build consensus for it, there’ll be problems.
