THREAD
If a No-Deal Brexit happens, when we look back on 2016-2020, public figures will be held PERSONALLY responsible. That includes media personalities!
Here are some simple facts and arguments which should be public knowledge by now. You have about 3 months to make it right.
Losing Single Market access DOES NOT mean we stop trading.
The Single Market is the system of shared EU regulations and the automatic acceptance of products from other EU countries when there's no common EU rule. It avoids having to comply with 28 sets of rules, lowering costs.
There is no country in the world that trades with its closest neighbours on WTO rules alone. So No-Dealers are asking us to do something that every successful economy in the world has chosen specifically not to do.
A drop of logic would tell you that makes us poorer.
The subject of the EU referendum was our relationship with the EU. In or Out.
*In* was codified by two international treaties and couldn't be changed without our consent (See EU Act 2011)
*Out* included multiple incompatible EU-UK relationships, none more popular than membership.
The Good Friday Agreement was signed after a referendum where the agreement was sent to every home in N/RO Ireland, whereas they wrote our deal 3yrs later. Our referendum was less informed & therefore less democratic. So a referendum where we see the terms can only ADD democracy.
Only Parliament can deal with Brexit. At the last election, the one which constituted it, over 53% of voters chose parties whose manifestos explicitly opposed No Deal. So for Parliament (or Boris) to take us out of the EU without a deal would be going against its voters' wishes.
Any version of Brexit is not the end. Both deal and No-deal mean years of negotiations, with the same arguments on our screens day in, day out.
And all other issues will continue to be ignored.
i.e. Being bored of Brexit / wanting to move on is a reason to stop Brexit, not do it.
EU27 have a Market of 450 million consumers & 5x UK GDP (Germany's GDP alone exceeds ours)
A no-deal Brexit means it's more expensive for them to sell to ONE of their closest markets. For us it's our THIRTY closest! (+ the countries the EU has deals with)
THEY DON'T NEED US MORE!
"But we buy more from them than they buy from us"
I buy more from Asda than Asda buys from me. I'm a good customer, but Asda isn't going to compromise its trading principles with its other 2,700,000 customers to keep me happy. Not even for their best customer.
