I empathize with people who feel angry, frustrated, scared, anxious, helpless, hopeless, determined, brave, optimistic, galvanized, vigilant, or hopeful about climate change.

What I won’t validate is defeatism. Anyone who says we’ve lost, or that nothing can be done, is wrong.
You know how they say depression is a liar? That voice that tells you that you’re worthless, unloved, and will never feel whole again?

It’s wrong about you, and it’s just as wrong about the Earth.
There are people, species, communities, that face a great and terrible risk. There will be casualties. But there will also be tremendous resilience and survival, too. That’s the story of Planet Earth, for all 4.5 billion years of life on our “mote of dust suspended on a sunbeam.”
We can’t prevent harm, but we can reduce it.

A zero-harm scenario was never possible: harm has already happened. Death, and extinction, are still forever.

But the more we do now, and the sooner we act, the less harm we do in the future.
Saying it’s too late for Planet Earth is not only factually wrong (there are no credible studies suggesting this, for people or wildlife), but it also means you’re saying it’s okay that we do more harm.

It’s okay to be depressed. It’s not okay to advocate for depression’s lies.
Even preventing a little harm is better than none, right?

Even if it wasn’t possible, I’d still go down fighting. With everything we’ve put Earth through, it’s the least we can do for her.
