Prof. Stefan @rahmstorf talks about tipping points, focussing on the Greenland ice sheet and the Gulfstream. This is from October 2019.

“This warming by 4° (after last ice age) raised sea levels by 120m. We still have enough ice to raise sea levels by another 65m.”

[THREAD 1/5]
Prof. @rahmstorf explains the ice elevation feedback:

“The Greenland ice sheet is about 3000m thick. And so the surface is way up in cold layers of the atmosphere. But as it melts the surface moves into warmer layers. It will doom the ice sheet to a complete loss.”

[THREAD 2/5]
@rahmstorf explains the desalination point as tipping point of the Gulfstream.

“If you add meltwater (freshwater), the whole circulation gets slowed down. And still the models used to assess the fate of the Gulfstream mostly don’t include the Greenland ice sheet.”

[THREAD 3/5]
“The Gulfstream is already slowing down. Once we cross tipping points we will trigger major disasters at planetary scale. We don’t know how far away these tipping points are but we are moving towards them. It’s like running towards a cliff in the fog.”

From Oct. 2019. Full talk here:

@rahmstorf talked about the IPCC assessment of the Gulfstream not taking into account the Greenland ice sheet. Watch @MichaelEMann talking more about too conservative IPCC projections:
