Asking any foreign government to help you win an reelection is wrong.
Using your public office and American taxpayer money to coerce a foreign government to help your reelection efforts makes it worse.
The Trump-Zelensky phone call was just one of many plays -- plays conducted before and after the call -- carried out by USG officials and private actors aimed at getting Zelensky to help Trump reelection effort.

As a militant anti-communist, pro-democracy student and activist who had studied in communist Poland and the USSR in the 1980s, the fall of the Berlin Wall was a fantastic day in my life.
Chance, of course, provided the precipitant in the final events. But anti-communist, pro-democratic movements in Poland and Hungary and popular mobilization in East Germany also played a critical role in the run up to fall of the Berlin Wall .
The "free world", symbolized most vividly by Reagan's speech, also was a key component. Liberal democratic ideas won the Cold War, not tanks, missiles, or soldiers. & the "winners" were also those in East Germany, Poland, Estonia, Russia, Ukraine etc who ALSO embraced these ideas

There's lots of confusion in press commentary these days, and rightfully so, about how the national security team in the US government, including ambassadors, is formed. It's confusing ! THREAD /1.
Most people working at the State Department, Department of Defense, the CIA, and even the National Security Council are career government officials, who work for both Republican and Democratic administrations. /2
Only a small number of people at the top, usually at the Assistant Secretary level and above at State, Defense, etc. or at the Senior Director level and above at the NSC are political appointees. /3
