PREVALENCE OF HSD:
Demmler, JC, et al, BMJ, Vol. 9, Issue 11: The premise of this study is that there are definitive ways to diagnose various categories of disorders related to tissue variations generically known, among laypeople, as “double jointed”.
Computerized data of diagnoses gathered from Welch GP’s and hospital admissions over 27 years were universe of data in the Demmler Study. Diagnoses were made by clinical exam & history.
No objective laboratory studies were used to confirm correct diagnoses. The definitive conclusions were:
1. Prevalence of persons with HSD + hEDS was 1:500.
2. 30% were male & 70% were female
Certain outcomes of Welsh study concern me:
1. Criteria by which diagnoses were made is not described
2. 2.3:1 ratio of women:men diagnosed in the Welsh Study is unbelievable
Since January 2017, I have gathered clinical data on ~1,800 persons, my patients, in two different primary medical practices, Northern California (CA) & Hawaii (HI); patients encountered at federally funded FQ clinics (about 5,000 in US; one license per county throughout US).
The majority of patients were provided to me from caches of patients of doctors who had left the practices. Amongst this group, none had been diagnosed with HSD, hEDS, or Joint Hypermobility Syndrome. A handful or two already carried diagnosis of Fibromyalgia.
As I encountered all patients, I was on the look out for Fibromyalgia & various Syndromes (Migraine, CFS, TMJ, TOS, IBS, IC, Chronic Low Back Pain/Sciatica) that these patients commonly harbor. All patients with Fibromyalgia had hypermobility of their joints by exam &/or history.
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA: Within a group of ~1,200 patients, ~230 had Fibromyalgia & Joint Hypermobility manifestations.
I published 8 papers about my specific findings amongst my CA patients & within a cohort of 50, who were studied in-depth & shown to have primary Sacroiliac Joint Subluxation Chronic Pain Disorder Syndrome.
Publications of these 8 papers was place on my Twitter feed in the first months of this year, & in late October 2019 within the Proceedings of 10th Interdisciplinary World Congress on Low Back & Pelvic Pain, Antwerp, Belgium (available on-line).
Within HI, amongst ~600 patients new to me, ~75 had Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (aka HSD). I have not yet completed a definitive exam of these patients for Fibromyalgia, but cursory exams suggest most or all of them have this disorder.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. In CA Study, 19% (95:500) of patients in a general medical practice had Fibromyalgia & Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (aka HSD).
2. In HI Study, 13% (65:500) of patients in a general medical practice had Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (aka HSD).
3. HSD and Fibromyalgia are associated
In CA & HI, I did not make effort to apply hEDS criteria. My patient interactions took place over course of 25 months. All my efforts to gather & extensively document my data were self-funded with about ~1,300 hours of uncompensated over-time hours; roughly equates to $104,000.
Currently, I am setting up my own medical practice in Hilo, HI. I am through with medical politics & abuses rained upon primary medical doctors who make efforts to help people in pain & who suffer complex medical problems most other doctors deride & fail to diagnose.
