In prep for the MDS 2 release, I created some new videos and postings for the new MDM service in MDS.
MDS 2 opens the door to doing some pretty cool setups. You can now do user enrolled MDM as well as Device Enrollment via Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager.
There are 3 major scenarios when deployment:

1. Set everything up ahead of time
2. Setup of an existing Mac (user approved MDM)
3. Setup of a new Mac (Device Enrollment in the Setup Assistant)
We can now do all 3 scenarios. When enrolling to the MDM service either with Device Enrollment or a config profile (UAMDM), the MDM service does more than just give the enrollment profile. It pushes down packages, user accounts, settings, profiles, the works.
Enough talking. Here is a video showing UAMDM :

I used to think that these were a "good", 'better', 'best' for Workflows, UAMDM, and DEP-based setup. But they aren't. It depends on who is doing the setup and what the role of the Mac is.

Rental Macs are not the same as user owned Macs which is not that same as company owned.
Apple talks about "zero touch" for Device Enrollment (ABM/ASM), but if you look close, you see that it is Zero Touch *for IT*. And that really means for company owned devices set up by the users. It is one method.
The absolute coolest thing about MDS 2 is that you can mix and match.
Preload software and users with workflows. Setup at setup assistant with DEP. Enroll in MDM from a web page, get Munki configs and packages start installing. Have users install software from the Munki Managed Software Portal.
I wanted MDS to be a modern replacement for Deploy Studio, and while we still have a ways to go with webhooks and other features, MDS 2 is going to be awesome.

And as always, free, open source, with paid support available.
