It's because hockey is the most intense location where we form the white supremacy and misogyny on which Canada's entire system is built and maintained.

From exalting hockey and hockey players to the national obsession with the myths related to the sport, we hold up ockey players as the quintessential Canadian. All other Canadians Canadianness is evaluated in relation to these boys or men.
OF course, this doesn't apply to all hockey players or all Canadians but it doesn't need to -- mythmaking doesn't care about nuance or people fighting to change the status quo within the sport.
And so, through pop culture, media, advertising and political messages, our identity is forged through understanding these boys and men as the best among us. When we attack hockey, we attack the core of this country. It's why so many people react so strongly...
It's because if we upend who we hold up as the true Canadian, it opens space for marginalized people to maybe also be considered a true Canadian too. It asks tough questions about the violence and misogyny of sports culture. It would actually force us to collectively grow up.
