When have you ever been the "good guys" in the Middle East?
The last time I remember seeing public popular expression of gratitude for something the US did was in Libya in 2011. Before that, Kuwait in 1991.
Ironically, despite the very high levels of anti-American sentiment in the region, people still dream of emigrating to the US. The hatred is for the most part caused by US foreign policy.

Let's fact check:
- No please let's not get the Saudi dictatorship and the Iranian dictatorship together. We deserve better than a choice between cancer and ebola, Bernie
- You never spent all that money for "their" conflicts, you spent it for your corrupt interests.
"We're sick and tired" - oh really now? You supported our dictators and occupiers for 70 years and now *you're* sick and tired? Oh we're so sorry your majesties for bleeding on you while your "allies" crushed our bones.
*Corrupt interests = those of successive US administrations, not Bernie per se, of course. He was never part of any of those administrations. But he should know better.

I honestly take pride that the art, and even the identity, of my native region defies all definitions. You can't encompass it under a single religion or language or ethnicity or continent or period. This may frustrate analysts but gives me great pride.
This is our region in all its human vastness, a cradle of civilization, defying definitions and refusing to be contained into words. A sublimity that mirrors the ineffable sacredness of the divine.
We are Sunni and Shia and Christian and Jewish and more. We are Arab and Persian and Turkish and Kurdish and Amazigh and Coptic and Assyrian and more. We're not free until we're all free and we're not safe until we're all safe.

How do I feel as a devout* Muslim who is also a prominent human rights activist? A topic I've avoided speaking about in years but that has distressed me (and others) for a while
First off: I acknowledge that "devout" (and other markers of religious commitments) are problematic. What one considers to be devotion varies from person to person; and in general one shouldn't describe themselves as devout. But let's put this point on hold --
For years now I've been treated with suspicion, even outright hostility, by two large groups who believe a devout Muslim cannot be a human rights activist. One of these groups thinks I'm a crypto-Islamist. The other group thinks I'm a deviant heretic.

It seems an independent auditor came to Abu Salim today looking into UN activities. The guards told detainees in advance not to mention that they haven't been fed for months (some of their families are sending them money to buy food with instead, which guards take a cut from).
Messages today from Qasr bin Ghashir dc, southern Tripoli, today, where they’re asking for evacuation & any organisation that can help them.
Sorry for my confusion, the teenager above was being held in Qasr bin Ghashir, but has now been moved to the UNHCR facility in Tripoli for evacuation. He's asking for help for those he left behind.

For the last 24 hours I've been texting & calling with refugees in Libya. 500 are apparently stuck in a Tripoli prison w/o food & water after heavy fighting broke out two days ago. They say their guards ran away, leaving them alone.
These refugees are men, women & children. They tried to cross the Mediterranean earlier this year, but were found by Italian boats, who turned them over to the EU-backed Libyan coastguard, who put them in prison. The conditions were already terrible before the fighting started.
Oh the phone earlier I could hear children crying & what sounded like bombing in the distance. The refugees say everyone's incredibly frightened. "We hear machine guns, tanks, big bombs, last night from the roof it was all fire."
