I got an email this morning asking for my views on 'Google won't pay french publishers for snippets" ... so here is a quick reply: [thread]
First of all, this may sound condescending, but "I told you so". No seriously, we (meaning pretty much any media analysts) have been telling publishers this for the past 10 years.

It was delusional at best to even think anything else would happen.
Secondly, but even if Google had paid, as a publisher, you would not have made any real money from it. I wrote about that here: baekdal.com/analytics/lets…

I see a lot of media people sharing the latest Monday Note article, the one blaming social media.

First of all, I love the Monday Note. It's on my list of "primary" publication that I read everything from. But...

But... the overall premise of the article is two things.

First, that the distribution model directly correlates with trust in media. Generally, I would say that this is true. The more you can get people to connect with you directly, the more trust you also have.

This is a perfect example of why I don't like Facebook's algorithm. It drives the wrong type of engagement. In this case, you see a person post something that is clearly not true. So thousands of people comment on it, telling the poster that it is incorrect...
This drives up engagement, causing it to be seen by more people, who comment, share and engage with it, and suddenly it has 528,000+ comments, 3,600+ shares, and 39,000+ likes. This is the problem with social media, and in particular with Facebook. It rewards the wrong behavior.
Most of the problems we have today with social media are related to this behavior. For instance, what we see with fake news, with low-quality viral posts, with how publishers 'pivot to crappy videos', etc. But the problem is also with people as a whole.

Here’s a good essay from @steve_vladeck on ways for Congress to change the law to make it harder for a President like Trump to bypass the Senate confirmation process. So why is changing the law necessary? Well...
2. We’d need to change the law if the Senate majority were unwilling to impose any costs on Trump for leaving large Departments headed by acting, unconfirmed appointees. But a majority unwilling to do this would not be willing to change the law. What could Senators do now?
3. They could start with public statements. A letter from @senatemajldr to the President demanding nomination of new @DeptofDefense & @DHSgov Secretaries could go a long way. Since this President does not read, perhaps a TV talk show appearance might be more effective.

Another small addition here...

I've gotten critiques saying that I'm claiming intersex people "aren't real men or women." That's NOT what the data says. What the data says is that the labels "real men" and "real women" are not accurate labels for ANYONE.
For example, outside of the more obvious cases, I naturally have a significantly lower resting testosterone level than my brother. This means a lot of things. It means I'm likely to respond differently to hormones or mimics/disruptors.
Give us both testosterone (or estrogen, or a bisphenol) and the results would be different. It doesn't make him or me a "real" man, it means we're in different places along the response curve. It means that "real" is an arbitrary line we've drawn.

One would have thought that Tweets with Childlock as this, simplified to the fullest will not need explanation but they sometimes confuse the simple folks one was trying to help from sinking in the linguistic territory abnitio.
There is no one with a meaningful purpose that has a clear path. You can only have clarity on your ability and capacity (if you have found yourself) and would need to trust God in the rest. Look at Moses, was his path clear before the read sea? Of course not. It seemed impossible
