In a new lawsuit, Kash Patel, a White House national security aide (and, as described by his lawyer, "brilliant attorney"), says it is defamatory to falsely allege that a presidential aide provided information to the president.
In fact, the "insult, pain, embarrassment, humiliation, mental suffering" and various other injuries that a presidential aide suffered after being falsely accused of communicating with the president exceed $25 million in damages.

As it happens, Patel's lawsuit was filed by the same lawyer who helped his former boss, Rep. Devin Nunes, bring a lawsuit against Twitter because a fictional cow was mean to him online. (Rep. Nunes also sued the fictional cow, and many others.)

Barr authorized the surveillance program in 1992. A DOJ Inspector General report concluded this year (a mere 27 years later) that the government hadn't tried to determine whether the program was legal before starting it, and hinted that perhaps it wasn't.
Background: For decades, the DEA secretly gathered data on billions of calls from the United States to 116 countries. It was the government's first known bulk surveillance program, gathering data regardless of whether people were suspected of a crime.
