This extremely boring 6-page document allows the U.S. government to deport vulnerable people seeking protection at our border from persecution we were largely responsible for enabling to the middle of Guatemalan jungle.

Every American should know about this. Few ever will
This & other #safethirdcountry agreements we are finalizing with Honduras & El Salvador should go down as strong contenders for Worst Trump Immigration Policy.

We'll never know how many will have suffer kidnapping, torture, rape, extortion, immiseration, & death over this.
As Richard Nixon once said to a young Donald Rumsfeld:

"Latin America doesn't matter. Long as we've been in it, people don't give one damn about Latin America."

True then. Far, far more true now.
These #safethirdcountry agreements are almost certainly the single worst act of administrative violence committed under Trump.

More on AV and how you can push back against it here:

Under intl law, #safethirdcountry agreements don't actually require the country in question to be "safe." A "full & fair" asylum system is enough.

Guatemala technically follows international law, so this opening paragraph is true.

But they can't possibly handle what's coming
Not only is Guatemala not "safe" for vulnerable people fleeing gang violence--it's pretty much frying pan to fire--but the place where we plan to send them is uniquely unsafe in and of itself

UPDATE: not even 24 hours later and we're really doing this

So this is going to be fine obviously (reporting by @Haleaziz)
