1. Fiona Hill has been getting rave reviews. . John Cassidy of The New Yorker compared her to “a Plantagenet warrior.” -- The New Yorker. “Queen Fiona” -- The Bulwark “a patriot with a heart-tugging immigrant story stands up to bullies and liars” -- Washington Post
2. Much of the praise for Hill is merited. She was far and away the most formidable of the impeachment witnesses, had a strong command of fact & argument, and made Trump's corruption very clear to anyone paying attention.
3. But I think it's useful to separate out the witness part of Hill's testimony (her clear account of Trump's wrong-doing) from her policy advocacy (USA using Ukraine as a counterweight to Russia).

I wasn't expecting "The Irishman" to so closely parallel the recent Don Cherry kerfuffle.
The Irishman is pretty great, by the way. Definitely in the same league as Goodfella and Casino, sharing the same thematic concerns as two movies but arguably deeper.
The one question mark I have with The Irishman is the Pacino performance. Often powerful but maybe a shade too broad and histrionic, especially compared to the restraint of everyone else?

1. One thing I've noticed is that as the case for impeachment becomes harder to dispute on legal and factual grounds, Trump's supporters have been trotting out religious language more and more.
2. To be sure, alliance between GOP & Trump is of longstanding. Still, there's a difference between arguing God has a mission for Trump and saying Trump is "the chosen one" (a term he used for himself).
3. If Trump is the chosen one, then impeachment becomes a defiance of God's will. Facts and law are irrelevant -- it's a battle between God and the Devil, with God wanting Trump to win. More thoughts here: thenation.com/article/impeac…

This is a good review that tackles a subject that many historians shrink away from because it's embarrassing: the dingbat Confederate-nostalgic late-period writing of Eugene Genovese, one of America's greatest historians.
I suppose Gene Genovese, who went from being a Stalinist to a reactionary Catholic, is a good example of horse-shoe theory. More interestingly, I think he illustrates how powerfully the Cold War encouraged binary thinking.
The thread that connects Genovese's life is his tendency to sentimentalize societies that he saw as alternatives to capitalism, be it the Soviet Union or the slave-owning South. But under-girding that was an overemphasis of just how alternative these societies

1. The first time I felt seen was in my elementary school library. I was by myself, as all my classmates had already picked out books for their book reports. I had the wild idea to find a book written by someone w/my last name but found nothing. Determined, I kept looking...
2…and then I saw it. I grabbed the book, clutched it to my chest, and jumped in elation. I couldn’t believe it!

Someone with MY last name was SO important there was an ENTIRE book on him!!!

My parents had to gently explain to me that I was NOT related to Robert E. Lee.
3. There were few other AsAms in ABQ, NM. When we played the celebrity look-alike game, I always got Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan, which, you know, you’d prob have to be them to make that stretch. Looking for an AsAm author or book was part of my desire to belong, to be visible.
