In the IIASA database, there are 718 estimates of how much CO2 emission reduction, in 2020, would result from a carbon tax.
The two extremes are a 99% emission reduction for a $44/tCO2 tax and a 36% emission reduction for a $2129/tCO2 tax.

Emission reduction should be an increasing function of the carbon price. Put together, the models used in IPCC AR5 do not obey this logic.

2/15: The plans tick many of the right boxes – standardized designs, fleets, etc. There is also talk of encouraging the private sector – but will they bite? Global private sector is even harder given #DifferencesOfOpinion on the nuclear liability bill.
3/15: Nuclear has many concerns for different people – fuel disposal, accidents, proliferation, etc. Latter is a non-issue as India is a proven mature actor, and it also can island safeguard civilian reactors. But what about the economics? Esp. fully loaded costs.

According to 2 groundbreaking studies on corporate tax avoidance in SA, mining companies & financial service firms are the biggest culprits of tax avoidance. This should probably be unsurprising as these corporates are serial offenders in economic crime.

Ok, so a bit of a nerdy thread coming up, using Fujian province’s ETS to illustrate what’s so wrong with China’s pilot #carbon markets. #OCTT
I’m using Fujian in this thread, but many of the other pilot markets have the same problem. It should sound alarm bells in Beijing setting up the national carbon market and also for foreign companies eager to trade Chinese carbon.
After some small-scale trading in Fujian after last year’s compliance deadline, the local carbon permits went unchanged and untraded at 29.70 yuan from Nov. 28 last year until Mar. 8 this year.

Putting a price on carbon.

The IPCC report on holding global warming to 1.5°C released Sunday calls for it. A share of the Nobel in Economics was awarded to William Nordhaus this week for championing it. It's arguably the most efficient and powerful climate policy available.
