Database has about 12,000 faculty members whose names figure in more than one medical college, a practice that is not allowed. In most cases, spelling of name is altered, or initials expanded or order of first name, middle name and surname reshuffled. Are they trying to hide?
MCI inspections are conducted every year, especially in newer colleges, where the employment status and identity of each faculty member is verified. Yet, the council’s faculty database remains a mess.
MCI launched Rs 45 crore ‘digital mission mode project’ in 2016 to monitor faculty attendance through biometric system. Online system had 431 colleges with 64,000 faculty whose daily attendance was being centrally monitored by MCI. This central monitoring was recently abandoned.
Assuming 10 lakh doctors in India, 2.6 lakh in faculty database would constitute 25%. There are roughly 40,000 post-graduate seats (not counting diplomas and fellowships) for over 60,000 MBBS seats. Doctors with PG degrees, ie specialists, could at best be about 40% or 4 lakh.
