@Muslamics @tamhussein 1) “People do not fight for a cause, they fight for each other,” as Dr Marc Sageman rightly concludes. No terrorism prisoner is motivated by religious texts, because there are no Islamic texts that justify terrorism. Religious justification always comes after the event.
@Muslamics @tamhussein 2) Offering “deradicalisation” programmes is a lucrative business opportunity for those offering it. They don’t have any effect because the prisoners see the clerics and imams delivering them as sellouts and lackeys anyway.
@Muslamics @tamhussein 3) Here’s the challenge: how do you provide “enlightening” mentoring (I don’t like the word “deradicalisation”) to current or former prisoners without going through official bodies and thus coming with the sellout label attached?
@Muslamics @tamhussein 4) In prison and since I came home I have had many such robust discussions with Muslim terrorism prisoners regarding world view maturity. I do so in private, unpaid, in my own time so they know I don’t have an ulterior motive except their welfare.
@Muslamics @tamhussein 5) Over 90% of the terrorism prisoners I met in the UK were newly practising Muslims. They didn’t know about basic ritual hygiene nor how to recite the Quran properly, let alone know about fiqh and shariah rulings.
@Muslamics @tamhussein 6) Leaving Muslim terrorism prisoners in mainstream population where their opinions are challenged internally (by their own reflection) and externally (by interactions with other prisoners) is the best way to reduce recidivism.
@Muslamics @tamhussein 7) Isolating Muslim terrorism prisoners like some propose, is the easiest way to breed resentment and hatred and increase the risks of reoffending.
@Muslamics @tamhussein @NotThatBigIan my view on prison “deradicalisation” programmes, isolation of terrorism offenders etc. Apologies I’ve messed up the thread but see points 1-7. I agree it’s a challenge. Prisoners don’t respect those they see as “sell outs” so how to square the circle I don’t know.
