"The world’s average temperature is headed toward a gain of up to 5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century."

For context, the last ice age was about 5 deg C (9 deg F) colder than today.

Think about that for a minute. No, really think about how much the world changed between the last glacial maximum 20,000 years ago and today. Ice sheets thousands of feet thick covered N. America. Sea level was 300 feet lower. The world looked like a different planet.
So 5 deg of warming will alter the planet beyond recognition. And it's worse than that. The warming coming out of the last ice age took 10,000 years. We'll do it in 100 years.

A lot of the kids alive now will live through this. To them: I'm sorry.

I've been thinking how to communicate the big new result that emissions have been revised downward, leading to less warming: 3°C

Here is my analogy: "Good news, everyone! Your firing squad is only going to have 4 riflemen rather than the 6 originally scheduled. You're welcome!"

I'm not ready to write off 2°C threshold yet. NO ONE knows how hard/expensive it will be to decrease emissions. However, experience with previous environmental issues (acid rain, ozone depletion) tells us that it will be cheaper & easier than even the most optimistic estimate.
The reason is that private actors are very very smart, so once there are policies in place to decrease emissions, the resulting innovation will generate new ways to solve the problem at modest cost.
This stands in contrast to the pessimism of the "free market" adherents (from @paulkrugman's fantastic NYT Magazine article: nytimes.com/2010/04/11/mag…)

With the new result that warming will likely be in the neighborhood of 3°C on a business-as-usual trajectory, I suspect skeptics’ next argument will be “3 deg C is warming is not so bad”.
Don’t fall for this. Remember: we’ve had about 1° of warming so far and the impacts are already severe. And the damages are non-linear, so the damage at 3° is a lot worse than 3x than the damage at 1°.

1. Okay, so this is my second thread about our big story on fast warming in the U.S. Here, I want to address the rather dramatic findings about winter that we report washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/…
2. In the Northeast, we found that winters tend to be warming up the fastest. In fact, we found that this is something present across much (although not all) of the country.
3. And for our fastest warming states in the lower 48 -- Rhode Island and New Jersey -- they would not be at or near 2 degrees Celsius (in NJ's case) if they were not well over that level of warming during the 3 months of winter (December, January, February).

Last week an archaeological site and ancestral burial were found under West Victoria St. It’s a reminder this place has been occupied *for millennia*, and that Kamloops imposed itself on unceded land—including all the heritage sites.

Lemme show you what that looked like. 1/
First, a review: There’s good archaeological & oral historical evidence that Kamloops and the S. Thompson Valley have been occupied since the last Ice Age. The area’s been called “the cradle of Secwepemc culture”- traits that appeared here are found through Secwepemculewc. 2/
That 500+ generation-long occupation made Kamloops a precolonial hub, and left a dense material record. In BC, Kamloops is second only to Victoria in number of known archaeological sites with 10km of the city centre.

There are about 140 known sites in this city view. 3/

But as always, coming at it the long way around...
That road was literally, no exaggeration no bullshit built in an upland seasonal creek.
If you get the right USGS Topo map you can see, the seasonal creekbed with a purple line right on top of it. Purple line added to map <some year>.
The road is in the creek.
Near the edge of our property the road and the creek separate. The road leaves the creek bed at a curve and heads off uphill. No pic.
The valley steepens, deepens, and cuts back to the east, and the road goes on straight, uphill, into a different watershed.
