When quoting false right-wing spin that Democrats don’t care about deficits, good journalism requires noting that the actual track record of the two parties suggests Democrats care more (and arguably too much) about deficits than Republicans.

if this whole running-for-president thing doesn't work out, Mayor McKinsey is setting himself up for a nice cushy gig lying about Democrats on Fox News.
Deficits soared under Reagan/Bush. When Clinton took office, he prioritized deficit reduction; his first budget resulted in the largest (at the time) single-year deficit reduction in American history. Literally every Republican voted against it. Then Clinton balanced the budget.
Then Dick Cheney declared "Reagan proved deficits don't matter" and he & George W. Bush ran up huge deficits with tax cuts for the rich and wars based on lies.
Then Barack Obama took office during economic collapse and pivoted to deficit reduction before we'd pulled out of it -- too soon, many economists argued.

Then Trump came along and again cut taxes for the rich.
In short, @PeteButtigieg, read a book or two and maybe -- maybe! -- run again once you've learned the first goddamn thing about modern American politics.
@PeteButtigieg guy fuckin' learned finnish to read a novel but he didn't bother to learn which party has actually cut deficits before he decided to run for president and spout off about deficits
@PeteButtigieg imagine how much smug entitlement you would have to feel in order to be a small town mayor who got 8,000 votes in your last election and who *doesn’t know the first damn thing about the two political parties* and still think you should be president.
An enterprising reporter should probably seek comment from, say, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and Barack Obama about whether it’s true (it isn’t!) that Democrats don’t care about deficits.
