1. NEW: I obtained a Texas sheriff’s report for the arrest of Aidan Bruce-Umbaugh, a member of the neo-Nazi terror group Atomwaffen Division. It shows he and another Atomwaffen member were in Texas to meet up with someone named “Cameron.” Here’s why that’s important. 👇
2. First, a little background on the arrest. When they were pulled over by deputies in Garza County, Texas on Nov. 4, Bruce-Umbaugh was the lone passenger in a vehicle being driven by Kaleb Cole, who’s been identified as the Washington State leader of Atomwaffen.
3. During the traffic stop, deputies allegedly discovered multiple rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammo in the trunk as well as a small amount of marijuana under the passenger’s seat and some THC oils in a backpack.
4. Deputies also ran the license plate of the vehicle, and according to the report I obtained, an alert came back stating there was a connection to a “possible terrorist organization” and to contact the FBI.
5. The FBI eventually arrested Bruce-Umbaugh on a charge of “possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of a controlled substance,” a felony.
6. In talking to authorities, Bruce-Umbaugh allegedly took full responsibility for the guns and drugs.
7. That was key. The reason? Cole, the driver, had been recently hit with a Washington State “red flag” order and was prohibited from possessing guns. king5.com/article/news/i…
8. But since Bruce-Umbaugh took the full weight, Cole was released without any charges. Bruce-Umbaugh is currently sitting in a Texas jail awaiting trial.
9. Now here’s why it’s important that the sheriff's document mentions someone named “Cameron.”
10. Cole and Bruce-Umbaugh are both from Washington, so there’s been some speculation about what they were doing in Texas.
11. An affidavit from the FBI, which was made public shortly after Bruce-Umbaugh’s arrest, said that he and Cole were traveling to Houston to “meet with some friends.”
12. Journalist @awinston, who knows Atomwaffen as well as anyone, noted last month that that was key because the group’s leadership currently lives in Texas.
@awinston 13. The sheriff’s report I obtained goes into more detail about that. It says Cole was asked during the traffic stop about their reasons for being in Texas and that he essentially refused to answer or gave vague responses.
@awinston 14. Bruce-Umbaugh, on the other hand, allegedly said: “We just got some friends in the area we wanted to visit.” When asked later for the name of the friends, Bruce-Umbaugh only said: “Cameron.”
@awinston 15. So who is Cameron?
@awinston 16. In 2018, journalists @ACInvestigates, @awinston and @Jake_Hanrahan published an article identifying John Cameron Denton as the top leader of Atomwaffen Division. Denton goes by the alias “Rape.” propublica.org/article/atomwa…
@awinston @ACInvestigates @Jake_Hanrahan 17. Here’s a photo of Denton that was published in that article.
@awinston @ACInvestigates @Jake_Hanrahan 18. This would seem to confirm that the Washington members of Atomwaffen were in Texas to visit the top leaders of the neo-Nazi group.
@awinston @ACInvestigates @Jake_Hanrahan 19. The sheriff’s report offers other interesting details on the traffic stop, too, including that Cole had a “black skull bandana” with him at the time. The “skull mask” is one of the hallmarks of Atomwaffen members.
@awinston @ACInvestigates @Jake_Hanrahan 20. In a few weeks, I’ll be launching a new project that takes a closer look hate and extremism in America. It’s called The Informant. informant.news/p/coming-janua…
@awinston @ACInvestigates @Jake_Hanrahan 21. I believe we need original, dogged journalism to confront this crisis of hate in the U.S. If you do too, please sign up so you don’t miss the launch on January 6. informant.news
@awinston @ACInvestigates @Jake_Hanrahan 22. In the meantime, if you want to read the full report from the Garza County Sheriff’s Office, I’ve made it available here. documentcloud.org/documents/6569…
