So, can someone explain to me why Dems appear about to sign on to Trump's USMCA trade deal? It's basically no change from NAFTA as is, but Trump will claim it as a triumph. Why give him that? 1/
Don't say that Trump will kill NAFTA if he doesn't get it. That would be a body blow to US business and crash the market — which is the reason Trump huffed and puffed and then basically negotiated nothing 2/
So again, why are Dems doing this? The economics are basically nothing, and the politics are bad. Who's demanding this, and why should they care? 3/

No doubt some Sanders supporters will claim that Modern Monetary Theory says that deficits don't matter. But even aside from the problems with MMT, that's not what it says — it says that deficits matter only if they're inflationary 2/
And while I'm for more deficit spending, spending on this scale — I think we're talking sustained deficits of more than 10% of GDP — *would* be inflationary. But actually that's not what worries me about the Sanders plan, because it won't happen even if he becomes prez 3/

Dean looks at GDP per capita. But Japan's aging population means that you really want to look at GDP per working-age adult. And by that measure Japan's growth has been essentially the same as America's 2/
The Japanese have also avoided mass unemployment, and they're doing a much better job than we are of not dying 3/
