Our new paper on the employment impacts of immigration is just out in Urban Studies: bit.ly/35iBgt7 with @DanOlner & B.Fingleton. I guess it’s not a great day to have a paper published! But our findings do have relevance for the next phase of Brexit in 2 ways:

1/6
(i) we find strong evidence of net +ive impact of EU migrants on employment. Corollary: provides an imperative for Boris’s proposed points-based immigration system to take this into account? @jdportes @MigObs

2/6
(ii) We develop a robust way of estimating the local employment impacts of immigration, previously not possible. Applied to London as proof-of-concept. Corollary: Opens up possibility estimating sub-national variations in the impacts of immigration on employment.

3/6
If applied to whole of UK, could reveal significant regional differences in employment impacts. So we may finally be able confirm whether the concerns about immigration in some of the poorest areas of the UK really do have any basis in fact.

4/6
If so, our approach might go some way to explaining the regional differences in the attitude to immigration and buttress the case for redistributing the spoils of globalisation between regions.

5/6
That would fit with Boris's pledged "mission to work night and day flat out" to earn the support of voters from former Labour areas. Naive to take at face value but maybe there's now a genuine incentive for a Tory govt to improve the plight of these areas? @CBeatty_CRESR

6/6
