Now that Brexit is a done deal - let’s be more serious about the debate about the future relationship. I feel the debate still has the wrong focus (thread)
1) Let us not waste our time discussing extension first. The first issue is: scoping. What needs to be in a deal? What is covered by EU competences? This has an impact on speed and prioritising @mij_europe
@Mij_Europe A deal only on EU competences can be done more quickly - deciding to do this has two consequences: a) trade-offs on issue between EU consequences and non-EU consequences become hard (/impossible)
@Mij_Europe b) the prioritising will be determined in the first place by EU law on competences if this is desired - neither by EU nor by UK competences.
@Mij_Europe 2) Quality should win the day over speed. But even an extended transition period ends and another extension runs into legal problems. So even with extension prioritisation will be needed.
@Mij_Europe 3) Whichever way we decide, some topics are inextricably linked: tariffs and LPF. Fish tariffs and access to fishing waters.
