So here's a quick recap for whosoever it may concern.
CAA is arbitrary, facially discriminatory and, despite attempts at legal jugglery, arguably, anti- constitutional.
BUT
That is what we are protesting.
Why the two together?
I'll let Amit Shah explain.
"Chronology samajh lijiye"
Can you prove you are an Indian. Yes? Good.
No? Are you a Muslim? Yes? Face uncertain future.
No? We will give you citizenship under CAA.
On the face of it this is an anti-Muslim legislation.
But in fact, it is worse than that.
The poorest of poor, which includes large numbers of Muslims.
But also,
Women
Trans people who have transitioned
Nomadic tribals
Other tribals
Dalits
Landless farmers/ labourers.
If they are non-Muslims they should be fine.
Not quite.
They'll still have to show they were religiously persecuted in home country and have been in India 6 yrs.
Let's say, eventually Shah gets rid of these requirements.
Then they should be ok?
Best case scenario - They get citizenship starting in 2020. A large number of them will face prejudice, socially and professionally, because of being branded as being from Pak/Af/Bangladesh
There's also the psychological impact.
I mean I know ghotis who would rather go to camp than be branded Bangals (no offence, Bangals).
Given the very serious difficulty of coming up with documents, 2 possible scenarios emerge.
1) Majority of this country is declared ghuspaithi and then many of them citizens via asylum (latter might surpass original population of Pakistan!)
Caste and religious prejudice, personal animosity, ideological and political affiliations etc will all be factors in what happens to you if you can't prove citizenship.
#CAA_NRC
Nationwide NRC is well under way as per this extremely worrying report by @ShoaibDaniyal
