I had an interview with a hiring manager today.

At the beginning of the interview, he let me know that unfortunately, the position was just filled.

I could go or stay and do a mock interview or just ask questions or whatever - so I stayed and learned a few things! 🌱

🧵1/6
We talked about what he normally asks candidates during this stage of the interview process and let me tell you -

Before @_collab_lab, answering some of his questions would've been SO hard, or even impossible. 🙌

So thankful for this experience! 🙏

2/6
We also talked briefly about live technical interviews and about the purpose - namely, to gauge what it'd be like to actually work with the candidate. 🤝

Which is hard to do! Partially because our culture has put so much pressure on the candidate to know EVERYTHING.

3/6
So as candidates, we're stressed and nervous. We can't say the wrong thing and we have to ace the coding challenge.

We'd never dream of saying "I don't know" 😰

But not knowing, and asking questions, and being open to new ideas is what working on a team looks like.

And remember - that's really what they're gauging! What it's like to have you on the team.

The hiring manager actually said he would be thrilled if a candidate literally said,

"I don't know - how would you do it?"

🤯

So just to reiterate - whatever the situation,

✨ It's OKAY to not know all of the answers! ✨

No one ever will.

And being able to communicate with humility is worth more than the correct answer anyway. 💚

Side note - all that came to mind during this part of our chat is my experience with @agilepdx' s mob programming workshop.

It's a safe space to say "I don't know" 💜
